I liked the movie, but didn't love it. And with sequel rumors swirling about, I certainly don't think there needs to be another.

I loathed the whole bridge scenario with Miranda and Steve; was disappointed that Charlotte was hardly in the movie; and unconvinced that Samantha would have stuck around with Smith as long as she did. Jennifer Hudson was my favorite part of the entire 150 minutes.

I own each and every season, and agree that seasons 2-4 are amazing...

You might be interested in the "Reel Geezers" review of SATC. They panned it, and I love their sassy repertoir: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ay_PvOXg9BQ

With regard to SATC, I guess I was just looking for a different movie, one that was more a true continuation of the series and less of a vamping up into a "movie event;" I wonder how the movie will hold up over time in comparison to the series, which I think does quite well after many viewings. The thing I loved about the series was that it balanced fantasy and reality really well, and I felt like the movie was just too over-the-top fantastic.

I think my reference to aging was just a surprised reaction to seeing the actresses on the big screen after some time away - the last two SJP movies I saw she was (literally) buttoned up, playing characters far removed from Carrie (The Family Stone and Smart People), and I think I was just surprised to see her body again, 4+ years from when I had seen it last. It could mainly be that you don't see many 40+ year-old actresses in these states of undress on the big screen too often.

Great description of the movie-going audience! Your ability to capture a scene is fabulous and funny.
The audience at South Point was not as extreme as the one you describe, but the ladies were definitely psyched to see Carrie et al return to the screen. The audience interaction with the movie was one of my favorite parts.

I liked the SATC movie because it was both serious and silly. There is definitely a fairy tale aspect, of living in NYC without concern for money but access to really expensive things, which can be enjoyable... I go to the movies for escapism and entertainment sometimes.

But aging, which you mention (with some disdain?), is also a serious if inevitable theme which I appreciated the characters confronting honestly.

Also... Charlotte does adopt a child, but then gets to have her own. And Miranda only forgives Steve after a lot of soul-searching. Maybe there's a happy ending, but SATC does have the characters go through some emotionally wrenching periods to get to that point.

Oh baby, I totally AGREE!!! Sean and I went and I was very very disappointed. I also don't remember Cynthia Nixon's neck being that thin.

I HATED the scene where they make fun of Samantha's (SMALL!) stomach pouch...

Too much product placement, too much fashion and I LOVE FASHION.

Thanks for this GREAT review.

Love always,
Meg

Thoroughly enjoyed reading your analysis, especially the "foreign movie in a foreign land" feeling! M & I saw SATC over the weekend and I had a similar reaction. We miss you out here on the east coast...
